Why “Hosted Lync Voice” when there’s “Lync Online?” What’s the difference?
Microsoft’s Office 365 / Lync Online is a great service, but it does not provide Lync Voice services and is not expected to provide PBX replacement services for the foreseeable future. This means that companies that use Office 365 today or in the foreseeable future cannot use Lync Online as a PBX replacement. Further, dial-up conferencing services are an “add-on” 3rd party service which can lead to significant added costs.
But, Microsoft does provide customers the option of using fully voice enabled Lync services with Office 365 – through the Office 365 E4 subscription plan. This subscription provides customers with simplified Lync Voice licensing equivalent to “traditional” Client Access Licensing (CALs) to deploy Lync Voice and enjoy an integrated Unified Communications solution and PBX replacement with the rest of their Office 365 applications. Further, customers have the option of deploying and managing this solution themselves or work with a partner to assist them.
